{"id":74912,"date":"2013-10-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-10-22T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dhgshop.it\/natural-dyes-10-gold-rules-to-dye\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T12:39:49","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T10:39:49","slug":"natural-dyes-10-gold-rules-to-dye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/en\/natural-dyes-10-gold-rules-to-dye\/","title":{"rendered":"Natural dyes: 10 gold rules to dye"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Dyeing with natural dyes never seemed to be easy<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">If you follow <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Paola Barzan\u00f2\u2019s advice on natural dyes<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, a well-known scholar in this field and our special consultant, each and everyone can manage to get great results.<\/span><\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/coloranti-naturali-regole-doro.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><br><\/span><\/p><br><br><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Take note!<\/h3><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Before you start to <\/span><strong><a title=\"Natural Dyes by DHGshop\" href=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/prodottiele2_eng.php?rep=8&#038;mac=16#cat57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">dye with natural dyes<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> it is very important to have a notebook for dyeing recipes at hand, where you can write them with order and precision.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Also we suggest you to have a pair of rubber gloves and an apron to protect you.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"text-decoration-line: underline; font-size: 18px;\">Please note that natural dyes (unlike synthetic ones) only dye natural materials.<\/span><\/p><p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The 10 gold rules<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> are the following:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">For dye bath with natural dyes we recommend you to use large <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">stainless steel <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">or enamel <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">pots <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">(capacity 25\/35 liters).<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The quality of water is of great importance. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">Avoid hard water.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> The best results are  guaranteed by using rain water or purified water, especially when dyeing cellulose fibers.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">Weigh the dry material you want to be dyed.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> The weighing is essential in order to calculate the weight of the mordant and the natural dyes to be used for every dye bath.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">Rinse with water and neutral soap.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> We suggest you to add a tablespoon of baking soda for cellulose fabrics (such as cotton, linen, canopy, bamboo, ramie\u2026).<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Prepare the water for your dye bath in a large pot: you have to calculate a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">20 to 1 ratio<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> between the water volume and the weight of the material you wish to dye. For example,  if you want to dye 100g of fabric you need 2 liters water.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">Wet the material<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> before adding it  to the mordant and the dye bath.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">According to the type of natural dye you have chosen, you need to prepare the material with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">mordent bath.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> This is a very important procedure in order to guarantee shine and  solidity of colour  and it differs from fiber to fiber. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">Fibers of animal origin<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> (and\/or relevant spun yarns and fabrics) have a greater affinity with natural colours and they only need a mordent bath. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">Vegetal fibers<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> (and relevant spun yarns and fabrics) made of a cellulose base, need a two-phase process with mordent, instead.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><br><br><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Dissolve <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a title=\"Natural Dyes by DHGshop\" href=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/prodottiele2_eng.php?rep=8&#038;mac=16#cat57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">natural dyes extract<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">in 1 liter of warm water with an iron tablespoon. Make sure there are no lumps. Then transfer it into a large pot, keeping the bath ratio between the volume of water and the weight of the dry material at 20\/1<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">Maintain carefully the temperatures<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> required in the recipes of individual natural dyes in <b><a href=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/blog\/article-perfect-mordanting_339.php\" target=\"_blank\">the dye bath<\/a><\/b>.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Rinse the material after the dye bath under <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;\">running water<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> until the water no longer has any trace of color.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Please note that dye baths with natural dyes end up to fade according the type of fiber you have used.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Usually <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">the first dye bath is not consumed at the end of the process<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, and it still contains the dyeing active ingredients which can be reused for a second dye bath. The second dye bath gives a lighter result.
