So we decided to dedicate a special segment to this dyeing process, because indigo, aside from being one of the most beloved colors, needs to be used in a special, ad hoc process.<\/span><br><\/p><br><br><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">It is important to remember that indigo is a direct dye and therefore does not require the use of a <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/blog\/article-perfect-mordanting_339.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">mordant<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">. However, that doesn\u2019t mean that you can start directly from the dyebath using the extract as is. <\/span><strong><a title=\"Natural Dye Indigo\" href=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/prodottisch_eng.php?mac=16&#038;cat=59&#038;rep=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Indigo extract<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> must first be prepared by creating what technically would be defined as a mother tincture.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Here\u2019s how it\u2019s done&#8230;<\/span><\/p><br><br><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Mother-dye<\/h2><ul><li><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Weigh the dry fibers <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">(and\/or the yarn and fabrics obtained by them).<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Rinse them with a <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">neutral soap<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Put your indigo in a 500 ml. can (preferably, iron) that can be closed with an airtight cap.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The amount of <\/span><strong><a title=\"Natural Dye Indigo\" href=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/prodottiele2_eng.php?rep=8&#038;mac=16#cat59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">indigo dye<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> needed for the preparation of the mother ranges <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">from<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">2%<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> (in order to obtain a light blue)<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> to 5%<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> (for a darker blue) according to the intensity of color that you wish to reach.<\/span><\/li><li><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Fill 2\/3<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> of the can <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">with water<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> and stir well to dissolve lumps if any.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Calculate the quantity of reducing agent based on the weight of the dye you are using for the reduction-oxidation process- <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">caustic soda<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">: <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">80%<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> compared to the weight of dye; <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">hydrosulphite: 80% <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">compared to the weight of dye.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Add the caustic soda to the solution in the can and stir again. The reaction with the caustic soda will <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">warm the solution<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Last, add the hydrosulphite and stir quickly.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Then close the can with your airtight cap and keep it in a <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">bain-marie for 20\/30 minutes<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> and maintain a temperature of <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">55\u00b0C (131\u00b0F)<\/span><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/indaco-bagno-tintura.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><br><\/span><\/strong><\/p><br><br><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Dye bath with indigo (tub)<\/h2><ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Pour the mixture obtained into a pot, filled with water beforehand (<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">bath ratio 20\/1<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">) and raise the temperature to 131\u00b0F (55\u00b0C), not more.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Add <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">1 mg\/L of hydrosulphite<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Put a lid on and let it sit for <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">other 20 minutes<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration-line: underline; font-size: 18px;\">The indigo bath is now ready and you can proceed to effective dyeing now.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Prepare a basin filled with warm water and <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">two tablespoons of vinegar <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">for rinsing the fiber after dyeing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Soak your fiber (previously rinsed with neutral soap) in the dye bath and make sure it is <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">completely submerged in the dye bath<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">.<\/span><\/li><li><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Do not shake the fiber excessively<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> to avoid creating air bubbles.
