{"id":74930,"date":"2014-05-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-22T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dhgshop.it\/how-to-felt-the-prefelt-by-leena-sipila\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T13:38:58","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T11:38:58","slug":"how-to-felt-the-prefelt-by-leena-sipila","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/en\/how-to-felt-the-prefelt-by-leena-sipila\/","title":{"rendered":"How to felt the prefelt by Leena Sipila"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">How to felt the prefelt, planning and organizing your work:<\/h2><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">choose your materials and prefelt in the desired colors;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">create a design and plan for your project;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">plan out each step of the project.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyeinghousegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/prefeltro-2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Before beginning a project, <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">it is always best to create a test swatch of at least 20\u00d720 cm so as to verify the performance of the prefelt<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> and the fibers as well as to ascertain the final result (be sure to carry out each step of the work process and to include all of the materials, and only those materials, that you are planning to use in the finished product).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Once you have confirmed that the final result of the swatch is as desired you can move on to the realization of the definitve piece, beginning with <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">the positioning of the prefelt<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> and all of the other materials according to the projected design.<\/span><\/p><br><br><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Felting<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Once you have positioned all of your materials, you can begin to felt. <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Felting is the first phase of handling wool<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> and is always carried out through fulling (or rolling), which, through mechanical movement and the use of water and soap, allows the wool to compact.<\/span><\/p><p><br><\/p><p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Initially both the prefelt and the fibers<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> will not undergo substantial changes in length or width but with continued processing, the material will begin to thin out and to shrink. Continue to work the material until it becomes uniform, that is, until the fibers (or other materials) <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">are well incorporated into the prefelt<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">. Keep in mind that <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/item-prefelt-extrafine-merino-wool-by-the-meter_0_0_21_9_19.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">DHG\u2019s superlight prefelt<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> usually shrinks anywhere from 20% to 40% depending on the intensity of the fulling.<\/span><\/p><br><br><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Fulling<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">As previously mentioned, fulling allows us to achieve a desired thickness and shape. <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Fulling can be carried out using various techniques, <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">differing based on the size of the work which you plan to create, which are:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">rolling the material using cold and hot water;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">squeezing the material in cold and hot water;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">vigorously pounding with a stick or club;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">manipulating the material (by placing it on a flat surface and twisting it) while inside a plastic bag;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">in a washing machine.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">To use a washing machine<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> to full your work you must follow a few specific steps: first and foremost you must use a top loading washing machine and not use water exceeding 50\u00b0C.<\/span><\/p><p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Then follow these steps<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">: place the piece you wish to full in the washing machine, turn it on and let it run for 10 minutes. Open the washing machine and check the fulling process.  As previously mentioned, fulling has been successful if the piece becomes thin, compact and maintains its shape and size (once it is dry, it will also be resistant to wear).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">If necessary, continue to full for another 2\/3 minutes. Lastly, finish your work with a rinse and spin cycle.<\/span><\/p><br><br><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Final touches<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">At this point it is necessary to lay out your work so as to give it an even surface. <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">For best results<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, simply <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">pull the edges of the prefelt<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> to obtain the correct shape and size and to also smooth out any wrinkles.  If necessary, adjust the shape by working it with your hands.
