{"id":75023,"date":"2016-03-31T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-30T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dhgshop.it\/carded-wool-evas-10-tips-for-perfect-felt\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T12:40:40","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T10:40:40","slug":"carded-wool-evas-10-tips-for-perfect-felt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/en\/carded-wool-evas-10-tips-for-perfect-felt\/","title":{"rendered":"Carded wool: Eva\u2019s 10 tips for perfect felt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">After the course about <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">carded wool<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> that I taught here at DHG a few days ago, I was asked to write a blog post about this technique.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">They asked me to give you a few tips, so here I am try to write down the many small suggestions I usually give my students. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">You\u2019ll see that some of this advice follows the basic rules of this technique (the same rules, by the way, apply for combed wool), some are small details, while others are just part of a working method that I have build along the years and I would like to share with you. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Do not see them as absolute rules, so follow them only if you wish. After all, everybody should learn to master the technique and then add their own personal touch, too, don\u2019t you think?<\/span><br><\/p><br><br><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Carded wool: my golden rules for perfect felt<\/h2><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Felt is a very tactile material, so it\u2019s ok to use scales and measuring tape when needed, as long as you don\u2019t forget to <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">experiment with more physical and intuitive aspects. <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Practice, learn how to calculate your moves, train your eyes to observe what happens along the way, and pay attention to what seems to \u201cwork\u201d and what doesn\u2019t. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Let your hands learn how to handle the material without following theoretical rules. <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Train yourself to \u2018feel\u2019 fibers, <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">to understand when it\u2019s time to work with more strength or to use warmer water.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/carded-batts.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><br><\/span><\/p><ul><li><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Carded wool is easier to use than combed wool<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, because you only need to open out the batt to get a layer of whatever thickness you need. You should learn how to do this delicately, paying attention to the direction of the fibers. <\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Use several thin layers rather than a single thick one, paying attention to which direction the fibers run: for example, if you start out with the fibers running vertically, go on in teh same direction until you have spread out the wool on the whole surface as required by your project. Wet each layer with lukewarm water and briefly compact it until flat, before you spread out the next layer. The fibers in the second layer must run in the opposite direction of the first one. <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Learning how to spread out the wool is vital<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">: make sure that the thickness is consistent because the final result strongly depends on this!<\/span><\/li><li><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Do not restrict yourself to one kind of carded wool only<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">. There are strongs types of wool, such as <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/fibers-carded-batts-carded-bergschaf-wool.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Bergschaf<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, which is really easy to work with and which can easily penetrate between layers; or kinds which give a dry yet not bristly effect, such as <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/fibers-carded-batts-carded-maori-wool.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Maori<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, which you can use for all kinds of needs, both for dry and wet felting; soft, delicate varieties such as <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/item-fibers-carded-batts-extra-fine-merino-wool_0_0_1_2_1.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Merino extra fine<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><br><br><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Wool goes well with a number of other materials, textiles, fibers and yarns. All of these materials may felt together with wool or resist this magical process. <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Experiment: they are a very effective way to personalize your work. <\/span><\/b><\/li><li><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Color is a great resource<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, but use it carefully<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">and choose the dyes well: if you spread out the wool in thin layers, you can create infinite multi-colored effects. Try it multiple times until you find the effect that\u2019s right for you.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/lana-cardata.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><br><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Soap helps let your hands slide along the fibers, to facilitate the felting process. You don\u2019t need much, so <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">do not create too much foam <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">because the fibers may get scattered and you may not be able to control them. I also recommend you use it when you vigorously rub the surface in the final steps of the process, as this will prevent unsightly bumps from forming. <\/span><\/li><li><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Don\u2019t use too much water<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">: if fibers are \u2018splashing around\u2019, they are hard to control.<\/span><\/li><l><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Bubble wrap is a cheap material, and very easy to find. Use it to lay out the carded wool, with the bubbles facing up, leaving room all around. This way, you can wrap the wool and roll it back and forth to felt it further. I suggest you choose the medium thickness kind, because you are going to need something that\u2019s a little compact.<\/span><\/l><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">These are my golden rules for a perfect felting of carded wool.
