Are you ready to take notes?<\/span><\/p><p><br><\/p><p align=\"center\"><br><\/p><br><br><h2 align=\"center\">Wool from A to Z<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">It is a textile fiber of animal origin. It is protein based and it is obtained from the fleece of sheep, goats and camelids who live in cold, mountainous areas.  The fleece is the coat which protects the animal from the cold and from water, and it is made up of two different types of hair:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">guard hair<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">this part is mostly made of bristly, brushy long hair, and it has the function of making the animal \u201cwaterproof\u201d;<\/span><\/li><li><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">down hair<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> it is made up of thin, wavy hairs, very soft to the touch. It protects the animal from the cold.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/lanadalla-a-alla-z.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><br><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The process with which the wool is collected is called<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\"> <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">shearing<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> If one wants to obtain long fibers, the animal is shorn only once a year, and the resulting wool is called<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\"> <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">full wool<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> If, instead, one wants a shorter fiber, with two blunt ends, the sheep is shorn twice in a year. The resulting fiber is called <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">second shear<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\">.<\/span><\/p><br><br><h3 align=\"center\">Main features of wool<\/h3><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The wool fiber is made up of a protein called keratin. When observed through a microscope, it looks like a cylindical tube covered in big <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>overlapping scales<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">. In fact, these scales are the key element in the felting technique. If these scales were not there, felting itself would be impossible!<\/span><\/p><p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/lana-dalla-a-alla-z.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><br><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Depending on which animal they come from, fibers measure from 2mm to 90mm in length, and have multiple elastic corrugations.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>main features of wool <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">include softness, elasticity, hygroscopicity and high thermal insulation properties. On the other hand, it has a low resistance to mechanical strain.<b><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Hygroscopicity<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">is the property certain substances have to absorb water molecules from the surrounding environment. Wool can absorb humidity for up 20-25% its own weight, without looking or feeling wet. So, it\u2019s important to maintain this natural wetness in wool, to preserve both its hand and its characteristics. If you can, store your wool in a cool and dry place<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">.<\/span><\/p><br><br><h3 align=\"center\">A few suggestions<\/h3><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Since we talked about felting, here are some suggestions related to that topic.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>When washing wool, be careful <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">not to expose the fiber to heat or friction. This way, you will prevent the scales in the garment to get stuck in each other and create a felting effect. For this reason, we recommend you wash your clothes in cold or lukewarm water, without rubbing, and then rinse abundantly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\">. <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">In order to make the fiber shinier<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> and to prevent felting, you can also rinse with water and vinegar.
