It is white, fine and shiny, and therefore very similar to silk, so much so that it is also called <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">vegetable silk<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, or, as we like to say, vegan silk. It is also known as Chinagrass.<\/span><\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/seta-vegana.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Rami\u00e9 Tops (right) and Mulberry Silk Tops (left)<\/span><\/strong><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">It is extracted directly from the trunk of two types of plants: Boehmeria Nivea and Boehmeria Tenacissima. A tree of these species can reach the height of 2 to 3 meters, and because it grows very fast, it is cut at the base at least 3 or 4 times a year.<\/span><\/p><br><br><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The extraction process for Rami\u00e9<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">It is really expensive to get this fiber, because the branches of the plant are so thick that they are impossibile to macerate. As a consequence, the first step of the process consists in <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">removing the bark<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">. After that, what you get is <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">raw ramie<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Once the raw material is obtained, another step is necessary before the fiber can be used. In order to separate the vascular bundles, the fiber needs is treated with chemicals, namely a lye bath, for at least 24 hours. After this treatment, the fibers are put into neutralizing baths, then rinsed, oiled and dried.<\/span><\/p><br><br><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Morphological features of Rami\u00e9<\/h3>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Rami\u00e9 is <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">grown primarily in China and India.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Its <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">natural color <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">is a <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">shiny white <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">and it is soft to the touch. One of its main features is a particularly long fiber, about 120mm. The average diameter is about 50 micron. It is a very elastic fiber and has a good resistance to twisting.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">To make the fabric more resistant and shinier, it is often mixed with other fibers (natural or synthetic), such as cotton, hemp, wool, and viscose.<\/span><\/p><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/item-fibers-tops-slivers-ramie_0_0_1_1_5.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">On our website, you can find Ramie<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> in many wonderful colors.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Ramie can be spun but also used for needle and wet felting.
