I gladly got to know this material better by <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">studying its characteristics and testing out the possible outcomes with the nuno felting technique<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">. Ever since I first came into contact with this technique, I was fascinated by how light you can make the fabrics, so much so that I make it an integral part of my creations. This is why I prefer working with <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">thin fabrics with a wide weft<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">as they allow me to create a nuno felt<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> that is as light and airy as possible.<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><p class=\"giustificato wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">So, I was particularly keen on their offer, seen as I have been looking for a very light but strong silk fabric, as one of the drawbacks of silk gauze is it&#8217;s rather fragile. <\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><p class=\"giustificato wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">From the moment I held the\ntulle in my hands, it was love at first sight. Anyone who works with their\nhands can tell you how important tactile sense and the interaction that is\ncreated between our hands and the material that we\u2019re about to manipulate is.\nAs well as being light, tulle is extremely soft to the touch, flexible and like\nI said before it\u2019s strong. But <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">what\nreally makes it stand out is by far its transparency. <\/span><\/strong><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><h2 class=\"giustificato wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center; \">Depending how the silk tulle is worked, the possible outcomes are endless.<\/h2><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">In my opinion the most\ninteresting aspects are:<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><ul class=\"giustificato wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">It allows you to get extremely light fabrics with a sheer and weightless effect<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">It blends with other materials (fabric and fibre) easily.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><p class=\"giustificato wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">very wide weft allows the wool to soak<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> internally easily and felt\nwell \u2013 as well as rapidly \u2013 even when used in several layers and mixed or\noverlaps other materials. This allows us to create very different textures from\na textured aspect and interesting contrasts between transparency and density.<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><p class=\"giustificato wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Out of the various samples\nproduced during my study, I chose two that bring out these characteristics of\ntulle and that <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">I hope will encourage you\nto experiment<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">. In the first texture we\u2019re going to look at how it reacts\ntogether with natural fibres to create solid fabrics. Instead in the second\none, how to intensify its lightness and transparency. Before getting started\nwith the tutorial I\u2019d just like to point something out: the information that\nyou\u2019re going to read is the result of personal experimentation and is therefore\nsubjective. Our composition will look inside out. It\u2019s important to lay the wool out after having arranged the decorations as we\u2019re going to use it like a \u201cglue\u201d in small quantities. Leaving the other fibres and the tulle on show. Like this, we can check its coverage without overdoing it where it\u2019s not needed.<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><p class=\"giustificato wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Get the work area ready and arrange one of the two pieces of bubble wrap with the bubbles facing up. Take the tulle and cut it into 4 45cm x 140cm pieces.<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><p class=\"giustificato wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Start by laying out the silk and ramie fibres into quite thick tufts, shaping them as you prefer (you can use any natural fibres available on the market) and space them out next to each other (fig. 1).<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tulle-e-nuno-feltro-un-binomio-perfetto.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><figure class=\"wp-block-image immagine\"><figcaption><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Fig. 1<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><p><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tullee-nuno-feltro-un-binomio-perfetto.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Fig. 2<\/span><\/p><p><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><\/p><p class=\"giustificato wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Now cover them with one of the\npieces of tulle that you have got cut out, place it with the short side towards\nyou and add other fibres on top (fig.2). Do it in a way that there\u2019s a bit of\nspace between the rows of fibre. At this point the ruffle up the tulle creating\nquite defined folds whilst incorporating the fibres inside (fig. 3).<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tulle-enuno-feltro-un-binomio-perfetto.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Fig. 3<\/span><p><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><\/p><p class=\"giustificato wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Part of the fibres will be\nabove the tulle and the rest underneath. Given the length of the tulle you can\ndo this step in two phases, first by manipulating one part of the fabric and\nthen the other. This will be the back of the nuno felt fabric and adds better resistance\nand finish by covering the layer of wool.<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tulleenuno-feltro-unbinomio-perfetto.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Fig. 15<\/span><p><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><\/p><p class=\"giustificato wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Once all the layers have been\ncoated you can start felting. Wet it with warm water and soap, using a small\nfelting water sprinkler and cover the project with another piece of bubble\nwrap, this time with the bubbles facing down. Wet the surface a little bit to\nmake it easier to slide your hands up and down (fig. 15) and start massaging\napplying a bit of pressure so the water seeps through into the fibres.<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dhgshop.performize.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tulleenuno-feltro-un-binomioperfetto.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Fig. 16<\/span><p><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><\/p><p class=\"giustificato wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Now wrap all of it around\nsomething tube-shaped and start \u201ctaxiing\u201d gently at first then harder so that\nthe wool fuses into the tulle. After a bit unroll it and check it and rearrange\nthe fabric if necessary. Change direction and continue rolling. Repeat this\nprocess until the wool fibres can\u2019t move around and have a certain stability.\nYou can check with your fingers that the layers aren\u2019t sliding about, this\nmeans that the wool fibres have gone through into the tulle and by clinging on\nto it they have fused together with the other natural fibres. At this point the\nsample will have undergone a part of the final shrinkage.<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\n<\/span><p class=\"giustificato wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">You can now go on to the beating phase, manipulating and beating the fabric on the table to give the fibres more firmness. Most of the folds that you created are stuck\ntogether and fused to the wool blending with the other natural fibres (fig.\n20\/21\/22). If\nyou go for the second option, you need to carefully lift up the folds that are\nembedded into the wool, detaching them gently from the surface. I advise doing\nit with some dry or slightly damp fabric. Some fibres are easier to see whilst others are covered up by the tulle but are still visible due to its transparency (fig. 27).
