Wool has historically always been in the in the veins of Prato and over time, the textile industry in Prato has become the largest in Europe. For this reason we love everything that wool represents and one of our goals is to promote it in the best possible way, drawing attention to all of its many features and characteristics. One of the noblest means to esteem the qualities is through Fibre Art.<\/span><\/p>

This was the impetus for inviting <\/span>Marjolein Dallinga<\/a><\/b>, an internationally renowned fibre artist and a dear friend of our, for an extensive exhibition at the Textile Museum<\/a><\/b> where the artist was hosted for a residence. During her stay, <\/span>Marjolein undertook a site-specific piece which was then connected to 14 other pieces created for her personal exhibition, entitled Garden of delights, which was then inaugurated in Prato in 2016.<\/span><\/p>

From this was born another DHG short dedicated to the world of textile art. A small, though, precious film that reveals the thoughts of an artist and a woman who chooses felt as her instrument to express he emotions and hopes.<\/span> Before watching the film it’s worth getting to know Marjolein through a short interview.<\/span> She will help and guide you inside her incredible world where ambiguity, bewilderment and interiority co-exist in complete harmony.<\/span><\/p>

What relationship do you have with your hands and arms? Asthey are the means that allows you to work.
<\/b><\/span>Hands and arms represent my comfort zone. I feel at easewith them. I feel the constant desire to touch and squeeze and this is what pushed me towards <\/span>felting<\/span> <\/span>as an art form; which is based on the manipulation of wool.<\/span><\/p>

Which sense is most involved when you work with felt?
<\/b><\/span>For me, felting is an authentic experience. It’s a journey that allows things to emerge from deep inside me, from my heart. It feels like an urgency that forces me to open up. Without this pushing me I wouldn’t be able to create. It is a solicitation that sometimes comes from something I have seen or even something I have touched. In other moments it can come from a dream or a feeling. I’ve never planned or drafted a project, the idea develops whilst I’ve already begun working. The only times in which I’m forced to plan are when I decide to change the size of a project. I am constantly captivated by my work and the moment I begin felting the sense that is most involved is touch, this is the sense that guides me. I understand that it is difficult to comprehend my creative process.<\/span><\/p>

Why did you choose Hieronymus Bosh and his Garden of Earthly Delights as inspiration for your personal exhibition?
<\/b>Hieronymus Bosh is a very particular and also a quite disturbing painter. But the beauty of his images really takes your breath away. I find the imagery he uses intriguing. The way in which he portrays his subjects, the ambiguity of his paintings. Everything in his works speaks to me. I have been enamoured by him since I was a child, I even had a print of him in my bedroom. I have never sincerely understood what sin is, what Heaven or Hell are, but they have always attracted me. So I tried to express what I feel about these themes and to imagine the Garden of Earthly Delights in my own particular manner. Full of contrasting emotions. I thought that felt was the right way to represent the emotions that Bosh’s painting evokes in me, <\/span>emotions <\/span>that are very physical. I am also thinking of working on the Garden of Earthly Delights again because awareness on this issue has grown and deepened as time has passed.<\/span><\/p>

Do you believe that the water felt technique has some sort of thaumaturgical power? Can it somehow heal the soul or <\/b>alleviate <\/b>pain?
<\/b><\/span>I believe it has a therapeutic component and I think this because felting is a physical process and wool as a structure is very similar to that of leather. I don’t want to say that you could heal from a sickness by practicing felting but the soul can definitely gain some benefit. Wool can speak to you.<\/span><\/p>
