June is Gay Pride Month around the world. Parades and demonstrations for LGBTQIA+ rights have been held in every corner of the globe since 1970. The year following the Stonewall riots in which a New York gay bar was particularly targeted by the police, a night in which many patrons were arrested on charges of indecency. It was also the night the gay uprising began.<\/span><\/p>

Opposing a system that does not accept and does not legitimize the right to love whoever you want and to adopt the gender identity that represents us is, for us, a duty. We consider it a responsibility to be at the forefront of combatting such prejudices and defending the value of inclusiveness, for any minority.<\/span><\/p>


<\/span><\/p>

To participate, all together, in this month of awareness for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community we thought we’d give you this free pattern to make the super fabulous \u2018Born This Way\u2019 rainbow pin! It is made with our Sailorman pure cotton ribbon and the design is by <\/span>Kate Alinari<\/span><\/a><\/b>, a crochet teacher and a prolific artist in the yarn sector.<\/span><\/p>

The \u2018Born This Way\u2019 pin, while not exactly the same colours, resembles the 6 colours of the LGBTQIA+ pride flag. Basically, it is a circle folded in half and sewn. To give some volume it can be stuffed with leftover yarn or cotton wool. The fringes are optional.<\/span><\/p>

With the Sailorman yarn that you purchase to make the pin you will be able to make all your friends and all your family happy: in fact, you will be able to create a heap of them!<\/span><\/p>

Tutorial: how to make a crochet rainbow pin<\/h2>

MATERIALS
<\/b><\/span>Sailorman yarn<\/span><\/a><\/b> 2 g \/ 0.07 oz per col. Cobalt, Sky, Breeze, Chick, Zinnia, Geranium<\/span>
Crochet hook n\u00b0 4 EU \/ G-6 US<\/span>
Wool needle<\/span>
Wadding for stuffing<\/span>
3 cm \/ 1.2″ long jewellery pin, sewing needle and thread<\/span><\/p>

GAUGE<\/span><\/b>
Disc measures 9cm \/ 3.5″ in diameter. The sample is not fundamental to this project.<\/span><\/p>

NOTE<\/span><\/b>
The pin is made beginning from a disc, worked in the round, and then bent to form the rainbow. The fringes are added at the end. To start a row with a new colour, cut the previous colour and pass it to the wrong side, hook the new colour with 1 slip stitch in the same stitch.<\/span><\/p>


<\/span><\/p>

PROCEDURE<\/span><\/b><\/p>

With the col. Cobalt start 6 chain stitches and close in a circle with 1 slip stitch.<\/span><\/p>

Row 1 (right side)<\/span><\/b>: 1 chain stitch (does not count as a stitch from here on), 10 single crochets in the ring formed by the chain stitches, close the row with 1 slip stitch in the first stitch. [10 single crochet]<\/span><\/p>

Cut the thread and start working with col. Sky.<\/span><\/p>

Row 2<\/span><\/b>: 1 chain stitch, 2 single crochet in the same stitch and in the following stitch, *1 single crochet in the next stitch, 2 single crochets in the next stitch*; repeat from * to * until the end of the row, close the row with 1 slip stitch in the first stitch. [16 single crochet]<\/span><\/p>

Cut the thread and start working with col. Breeze.<\/span><\/p>

Row 3<\/span><\/b>: 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet in the same stitch, 2 single crochets in the next stitch, *1 single crochet in the next stitch, 2 single crochets in the next stitch*; repeat from * to * until the end of the row, close the row with 1 slip stitch in the first stitch. [24 single crochet]<\/span><\/p>

Cut the thread and start working with col. Chick.<\/span><\/p>

Row 4<\/span><\/b>: 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet in the same stitch and in the next stitch, 2 single crochets in the next stitch, *1 single crochet in the next 2 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch*; repeat from * to * until the end of the row, close with 1 slip stitch in the first stitch. [32 single crochet]<\/span><\/p>

Cut the thread and start working with col. Zinnia.<\/span><\/p>

Row 5<\/span><\/b>: 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet in the same stitch and in the following 2 stitches, 2 single crochets in the following stitch, *1 single crochet in the next 3 stitches, 2 single crochets in the following stitch*; repeat from * to * until the end of the row, close the row with 1 slip stitch in the first stitch. [40 single crochet]<\/span><\/p>

Cut the thread and start working with col. Geranium.<\/span><\/p>

Row 6<\/span><\/b>: 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet in the same stitch and in the next 3 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch, *1 single crochet in the next 4 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch*; repeat from * to * until the end of the row, close the row with 1 slip stitch in the first stitch. [48 single crochet]<\/span><\/p>

Without cutting the thread col. Geranium, fasten all the other threads on the wrong side of the piece, then starting from the last stitch of row 6, fold the disc along the diameter to form the rainbow. Work row 7 to sew the rainbow, but before closing completely, remember to lightly stuff the rainbow.<\/span><\/p>

Row 7<\/span><\/b>: work 1 chain stitch, work slip stitches by inserting the hook into the stitches on the front and back of the rainbow. [24 single crochet]<\/span><\/p>

Cut the thread and hide it while attaching the fringes.<\/span><\/p>

How to make the fringes of the crochet rainbow pin<\/h3>

Cut 4 pieces of yarn 30 cm \/ 11.8″ long for each colour.<\/span><\/p>

With the rainbow upside down and facing right, attach the fringes as follows.<\/span><\/p>

Insert the hook at the bottom of the rainbow at the Geranium stripe, fold the 2 Geranium pieces in half and place them on the hook and thread them through the rainbow stitch to form a loop. Wrap the 4 threads on the hook and pull them through the loop to secure them.<\/span><\/p>

Repeat for the other colours attaching a fringe of the corresponding colour to each strip of the rainbow.<\/span><\/p>

Cut the fringes to form a “V”, with the fringes in the centre 10 cm \/ 4″ long and those on the sides 7 cm \/ 2.7″.<\/span><\/p>

Optional: Put a drop of glue at the bottom of each fringe to keep it from fraying.<\/span><\/p>

Finishing the rainbow pin<\/h4>

With the yarn and the wool needle, with a small stitch sew the central hole of the rainbow. Sew the pin to the centre of the back on row 5.<\/span><\/p>
