The poncho is a very interesting item of clothing. The first example of a poncho probably originates from the Americas, in a form that resembled a simple blanket with an opening for the head, nothing more. This made the poncho a very warm and practical garment to wear, as it allowed free arm movement without any restrictions.<\/span><\/p>

Today, the poncho has become even more unique. The materials used for making ponchos can vary greatly, and almost every designer has, at least once, created their dream poncho. Today, we offer a pattern to knit a poncho using our Hygge yarn.<\/span><\/p>

The design is simple yet very sophisticated. It features ribbing and a slightly raised neckline. It may be worn over a shirt for a casual look, or be layered over a sweater and paired with a coat or puffer jacket during the colder months.<\/span><\/p>

Thanks to the Hygge yarn, a super soft boucl\u00e9 with a generous percentage of alpaca and 50% Tencel lyocell \u2013 known for its durability and breathability \u2013 this poncho falls perfectly over the body like a warm embrace. We chose the color Brina, but on our shop, you\u2019ll find other beautiful color options, each one more beautiful than the next.<\/span><\/p>

We can guarantee the poncho will turn out beautifully only with the use of our Hygge yarn.<\/span><\/p>

Knitting tutorial: how to make a poncho with boucl\u00e9 yarn<\/h2>

The poncho is worked flat and is made up of two pieces: the back and the front. The neckline is worked by picking up stitches after sewing the top of one side.<\/span><\/p>

How to knit the back of the poncho<\/h3>

With knitting needles n\u00b0 <\/span>4.5 EU \/ 7 US<\/span>, cast on 67 (79) stitches.<\/span><\/p>

Row 1<\/span><\/b>: repeat (1 knit, 2 purl) until the last stitch, knit the last stitch<\/span>
row 2<\/span><\/b>: repeat (1 purl, 2 knit) until the last stitch, purl the last stitch.<\/span><\/p>

Rows 1 and 2 establish the 1\/2 ribbing pattern. Repeat 24 (26) more times, reaching row 50 (54), for a length of 38.5 (41.5) cm \/ 15.2″ (16.3″).<\/span><\/p>

Row 51 (55)<\/span><\/b>: 1 knit stitch, 2 purl stitches, 1 triple passed over on the next 4 stitches, continue in 1\/2 rib pattern until the last 7 stitches, knit the next 4 stitches together, 2 purl stitches, 1 knit stitch<\/span>
rows 52 to 56 (56 to 60)<\/span><\/b>: continue in 1\/2 rib.<\/span><\/p>

Rows 51 to 56 (55 to 60) establish the side decreases for the upper rounding. Repeat them 3 (4) more times, then work 1\/2 ribbing with no decreases for another 4 (0) rows, reaching row 78 (84), for a total height of 60 (65) cm \/ 24″ (25.6″), with 43 (49) stitches on the needle.<\/span><\/p>

How to knit the front of the poncho<\/h3>

With knitting needles n\u00b0 <\/span>4.5 EU \/ 7 US<\/span>, cast on 67 (79) stitches and work as for the back until row 74 (80): all the side decreases for the upper rounding are done, and there are 43 (49) stitches on the needle.<\/span><\/p>

Row 75 (81)<\/span><\/b>: work in 1\/2 ribbing on the first 14 (15) stitches, bind off the next 15 (19) stitches for the neckline, work in 1\/2 ribbing on the last 14 (15) stitches. Turn and continue working on the first side’s 14 (15) stitches, leaving the other side\u2019s stitches on a stitch holder<\/span>
row 76 (82)<\/span><\/b>: work in 1\/2 ribbing until the last stitch, bind off the last stitch<\/span>
row 77 (83)<\/span><\/b>: bind off the first stitch, continue in 1\/2 ribbing until the end of the row<\/span>
row 78 (84)<\/span><\/b>: work in 1\/2 ribbing until the last stitch, bind off the last stitch.<\/span><\/p>

Pick up the 14 (15) stitches on hold for the second side and work as for the first side ensuring to mirror the pattern.<\/span><\/p>

Finishing the poncho<\/h4>

Overlay the back and front right sides together, then sew the top of one side, joining the first 28 (33) cm \/ 11″ (13″) from the top. Leave the next 32 cm \/ 12.6″ open.<\/span><\/p>

For the neckline, using knitting needles n\u00b0 <\/span>4.5 EU \/ 7 US<\/span>, pick up stitches along the front and back necklines; the final stitch count should be a multiple of 3. Work 1\/2 ribbing for 10 rows or until reaching the desired height, trying to maintain the previous alternation of knit and purl ribs from the front and back. Bind off. Sew the neckline and the other side, leaving the final 32 cm \/ 12.6″ open on this side as well<\/span><\/p>
