Bubble wrap is a material used in water felting as a processing medium because it provides effective control of pressure, rubbing and water distribution during the initial stages of the process. Originally developed as a cushioning packing material, its bubble structure makes it particularly suitable for transferring uniform and repeatable pressure to the fiber surface.

In water felting, in fact, the initial phase is delicate: the fibers must be wet and begin to compact without shifting or losing their designed arrangement. Bubble wrap creates an intermediate surface that allows for controlled pressure and smooth rubbing, avoiding overly aggressive contact directly on the fiber. The bubbles, in addition to distributing pressure, also help manage friction: their modular structure allows for repeated and uniform movements, promoting the progressive attachment of wool fibers, which occurs through the combined action of hot water, soap, and mechanical movement. A further advantage is related to water management: bubble wrap retains and redistributes the liquid evenly, avoiding localized accumulations and allowing more stable and predictable processing on even large surfaces.
For these reasons, compared to smooth surfaces or traditional fabrics, bubble wrap is chosen as a functional tool in water felting: it is not just a support, but a true control device of the technical gesture.
