Loading...“Maori” is a blend of carded wools from New Zealand, a country celebrated for the quality of its fibers, obtained from extensive herds where sheep live in wide open spaces. This natural setting contributes to the development of strong, elastic and versatile wools, which are particularly popular for felting techniques because of their excellent ability to compact and work with ease. When we began developing this article in 2007, we were looking for a wool perfect for needle felting, with a natural base capable of enhancing both bright, intense colors and delicate pastel nuances. Test after test we arrived at this blend, which over time has become one of our iconic products, appreciated by beginners and experts alike.
The name, chosen as a tribute to the land of origin of these wools, completes the identity of a product that combines quality, versatility and inspiration.
Using carded wool sliver in 3D needle felting
Carded wool sliver is particularly suitable for three-dimensional projects with skeletons or metal structures. Because of its continuous shape and partially aligned fibers, it allows arms, legs and bases of 3D subjects to be evenly coated, reducing voids and irregularities. The fibers attach easily to the structure with the needle, allowing for a clean and precise finish.
Availability and packaging
“Maori” carded wool sliver is available in 100 g, 500 g, 1 kg packages by color. Each package has a natural tolerance of ±3%. The different packages are designed for both those who need small quantities and those who need large quantities and/or want to save money. The packages are generally vacuum-packed, reducing volume and lowering shipping costs. Don’t worry: once opened, the wool returns to its original, fluffy volume without any loss of quality.
Vegetable impurities
These types of carded wools go through several steps in production. They range from carbonizing to washing, dyeing, and carding. However, it is not possible to completely eliminate vegetable impurities, which should be regarded as an inherent characteristic and not a quality defect of the product.

The weight of the packages has a physiological tolerance of +/- 3%; quantities within these packages are sent in continuous ribbon.
Carded batt is a continuous sliver of fibers that have been cleaned and partially aligned, but not completely as in worsted tops. This makes it more compact and uniform than batt (carded wool), but less airy.
Why to use it in needle felting:
New Zealand wools are among the most highly prized in the world for quality, uniformity and versatility. They are derived primarily from breeds such as Romney, Perendale and Coopworth, which are raised on large open pastures. These sheep produce fibers of medium micronage, characterized by good strength, elasticity and excellent felting ability. It is precisely these characteristics that make them particularly suitable for techniques such as needle and water felt, as well as for hand spinning.
The generally light and bright base also allows for intense, bright and well-defined colors during dyeing.
Our New Zealand wool is mulesing-free, meaning it comes from farms that do not practice mulesing, a surgical procedure used in some areas of the world to prevent parasitic infestations in sheep. The choice to use wool from supply chains that exclude this practice reflects a concern for animal welfare and more responsible farm management.
The dyes used for our products meet the requirements of the OEKO-TEX standard, which guarantees the control and limitation of substances potentially harmful to human health and the environment.
Fiber dyeing is carried out in our dyehouse in Italy, in compliance with current European regulations on chemicals and environmental safety, including the REACH Regulation (EC No. 1907/2006), which governs the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemical substances.
Operating within the European Union also entails compliance with additional provisions on environmental protection and textile product safety, such as the CLP Regulation (EC No. 1272/2008), relating to the classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures. This regulatory framework ensures that dyeing processes are conducted according to high standards of safety, traceability and environmental responsibility, offering a reliable product for both the end user and the environment.
This blend is perfect for theneedle felting, forwater felting, for spinning.

CAUTION: All of our colors generally exhibit high lightfastness and wash fastness. However, fluorescent colors (80's collection), in addition to having a lower lightfastness, may also suffer significant color loss in the presence of alkaline or particularly aggressive soaps, as well as with prolonged processing or washing. This phenomenon can occur, to varying degrees, even with dark and particularly bright colors. For materials dyed with these shades, we always recommend that a preliminary processing and washing test be carried out on a small sample before making the final design. This precaution is essential, especially when dyed materials are combined with unbleached or light-colored fibers.
Finally, to best preserve the colors, it is recommended that artifacts not be dried in direct sunlight, but in a shady place.
