Cumbria expresses all the nobility of this fiber, appreciated for its natural softness, surprising lightness and ability to restore warmth without weighing down the structure of the yarn. Its construction (consisting of 3 yarns twisted together) enhances the raw material, allowing a wavy and irregular surface to emerge, with an enveloping and deeply comfortable hand. Alpaca becomes the absolute protagonist here, interpreted in a contemporary key that enhances its tactile quality and aesthetic performance. The result is an elegant and versatile yarn, designed for projects that require material presence, comfort and natural refinement, with a construction that dialogues between tradition and modern sensibility.
Availability and packaging
Our Cumbria is available in 50 g balls, which can be purchased individually or in packs of 10 per color. Each pack has a natural tolerance of ±3%. The different packages are designed both for those who need small quantities and for those who need large quantities and/or want to save.

Raw materials used in DHG's yarns are selected and purchased from areas of the world where each specific fiber expresses the best natural and performance qualities. Depending on the type, the fibers come from vocated and traditionally specialized regions, chosen to ensure high standards of purity, fineness and textile performance. Once selected, the fibers enter a transformation process that combines technical expertise and artisanal savoir-faire. In fact, yarns such as Cumbria are made through a careful twisting process, largely carried out with a still strongly artisanal approach in the textile district of Prato, a historic international center for fiber processing.
This balance between global sourcing and local processing allows the characteristics of each fiber to be maximized, resulting in yarns that combine quality, identity and manufacturing tradition.
It is worked with medium-gauge needles and crochet hooks, around No. 3 ½ or 4. For a more airy effect you can work with higher numbers, while for a compact result (e.g., for outdoor knitting) you can go down one number. Caution: you should keep in mind that it is virtually impossible to undo the work if you make a mistake, because the hairy part gets caught between the stitches and does not allow you to unhook them, so great care must be taken. If you are uncertain about the effect you want to achieve test the stitches, make a few samples before proceeding with the final design.
With needles: shaved knits, ribs and other fancy stitches with obvious and prominent patterns, because the hairy yarn tends to hide or camouflage the work. The structure of the yarn, which, despite its softness, maintains a well-defined structure, allows for smooth, straight edges.
Withcrochet: low knit is used to achieve a very compact result but higher knits can also be worked, keeping in mind a certain difficulty in closing the loops on the crochet hook with this type of yarn, which is nevertheless flowing.
Tips for working and care.
Our colors generally have high lightfastness and washfastness. Exceptions are fluorescent colors which have low lightfastness and may release color in the presence of alkaline or harsh soaps and with prolonged washing. The same applies to dark and bright colors. In all these cases it’s essential to test a small sample before starting the project, especially if these materials are combined with raw or light-colored fibers. In any case, it’s always good practice to dry finished items away from direct sunlight, preferably in shade.
A practical tip: Buying balls or spools of different baths can cause what is known as the barred effect: subtle variations in shade that seem invisible when comparing balls and spools, but become apparent once worked. Therefore, always be sure to buy some yarn in excess of what is needed for your project. We will be sure to send you spools and balls of the same lot.
