Loading...Ortica is a vegetable yarn that reinterprets the natural textile tradition in a contemporary way, transforming a wild and hardy plant into a textile raw material with a strong and authentic character. In this yarn, nettle is combined with cotton to build a balanced structure, where the softness of the cotton fiber meets the tenacity and slightly drier, “living” nature of the nettle fiber. The result is a yarn with a natural, slightly textured hand, with a texture that is never flat but always dynamic, capable of restoring depth to stitches and personality to surfaces. The nettle fiber, also historically used for its strength and visual resemblance to more noble fibers such as linen or silk, helps to make the yarn more robust and structured, without sacrificing the typical lightness of vegetable fibers. A choice that speaks of concrete sustainability and intelligent recovery of natural resources, where the material is not simplified but enhanced in its most authentic identity.
Availability and packaging
Our Ortia is available in 50 g balls, which can be purchased individually or in packs of 10 per color. Each pack has a natural tolerance of ±3%. The different packages are designed both for those who need small quantities and for those who need large quantities and/or want to save.
Composition: 75% cotton, 25% Nettle

Each spool of Nettle yarn is approximately 1000 yards / 1093 yards.

Yarn tension with needles: 17 stitches and 21 knits in a shaved knit 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 in.
Yarn tension with crochet hook: 15 stitches and 18 rows in a low knit 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 in.
Raw materials used in DHG's yarns are selected and purchased from areas of the world where each specific fiber expresses the best natural and performance qualities. Depending on the type, the fibers come from vocated and traditionally specialized regions, chosen to ensure high standards of purity, fineness and textile performance. Once selected, the fibers enter a transformation process that combines technical expertise and craftsmanship savoir-faire. In fact, yarns such as Ortica are made through careful twisting, largely carried out with an approach that is still strongly artisanal in the textile district of Prato, a historic international center for fiber processing.
This balance between global sourcing and local processing allows the characteristics of each fiber to be maximized, resulting in yarns that combine quality, identity and manufacturing tradition.
With needles: it is recommended both for shaved knitting (which tends to bias slightly, however) and for all other work, both openwork and relief. It must be considered, however, that the reliefs gain a lot of texture and heaviness in a yarn like this and must be balanced and well distributed over the surface.
Withcrochet: the basic low knit can be replaced by knits of different heights and various workings, even with transparencies and some relief (peanuts, popcorn, knits taken along the column to get reliefs). When there are several loops on the crochet hook, one just has to be careful to pick up the two ends of each link together each time. Tunisian crochet is also very suitable for this yarn.
Tips for working and care.
Our colors generally have high light fastness and wash fastness. Exceptions are fluorescent colors, which have low light fastness and may release color in the presence of alkaline or harsh soaps and with prolonged washing. The same applies to dark, bright colors. In all these cases, it is essential to test a small sample before starting the project, especially if these materials are combined with raw or light-colored fibers. In any case, it is always a good idea to dry artifacts away from direct sunlight, preferably in semi-shade.
A practical tip: Buying balls or spools of different baths can cause what is known as the barred effect: subtle variations in shade that seem invisible when comparing balls and spools, but become apparent once worked. Therefore, always be sure to buy some yarn in excess of what is needed for your project. We will be sure to send you spools and balls of the same lot.
