Loading...“Maori” is a blend of carded wools from New Zealand, a country celebrated for the quality of its fibers, obtained from extensive herds where sheep live in wide open spaces. This natural setting contributes to the development of strong, elastic and versatile wools, which are particularly popular for felting techniques because of their excellent ability to compact and work with ease. When we began developing this article in 2007, we were looking for a wool perfect for needle felting, with a natural base capable of enhancing both bright, intense colors and delicate pastel nuances. Test after test we arrived at this blend, which over time has become one of our iconic products, appreciated by beginners and experts alike.
The name, chosen as a tribute to the land of origin of these wools, completes the identity of a product that combines quality, versatility and inspiration.

Products in the outlet are offered at a reduced price because they have characteristics that do not fully meet our quality standards. They remain fully workable, however.
Availability and packaging
Our “Maori” carded wool is available in 100 g, 500 g, 1 kg packages by color. Each package has a natural tolerance of ±3%. The different packages are designed for both those who need small quantities and those who need large quantities and/or want to save money. The packages are generally vacuum-packed, reducing volume and lowering shipping costs. Don’t worry: once opened, the wool returns to its original, fluffy volume without any loss of quality.
Vegetable impurities
These types of carded wools go through several steps in production. They range from carbonizing to washing, dyeing, and carding. However, it is not possible to completely eliminate vegetable impurities, which should be regarded as an inherent characteristic and not a quality defect of the product.

Carded wools are made through a carding process, in which the fibers are disentangled and partially aligned, but not completely sorted as is the case with worsted tops. Carding opens and separates the fibers while retaining many of the shorter fibers and creating a softer, more airy and voluminous texture than combed wool.

Compared to combed tops-where the fibers are carefully aligned and short staples are removed to create a more uniform and regular yarn- carded wool has a fuzzier, less compact and often more "rustic" texture.
New Zealand wools are among the most highly prized in the world for quality, uniformity and versatility. They are derived primarily from breeds such as Romney, Perendale and Coopworth, which are raised on large open pastures. These sheep produce fibers of medium micronage, characterized by good strength, elasticity and excellent felting ability. It is precisely these characteristics that make them particularly suitable for techniques such as needle and water felt, as well as for hand spinning.
The generally light and bright base also allows for intense, bright and well-defined colors during dyeing.
Our New Zealand wool is mulesing-free, meaning it comes from farms that do not practice mulesing, a surgical procedure used in some areas of the world to prevent parasitic infestations in sheep. The choice to use wool from supply chains that exclude this practice reflects a concern for animal welfare and more responsible farm management.
The dyes used for our products meet the requirements of the OEKO-TEX standard, which guarantees the control and limitation of substances potentially harmful to human health and the environment.
Fiber dyeing is carried out in our dyehouse in Italy, in compliance with current European regulations on chemicals and environmental safety, including the REACH Regulation (EC No. 1907/2006), which governs the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemical substances.
Operating within the European Union also entails compliance with additional provisions on environmental protection and textile product safety, such as the CLP Regulation (EC No. 1272/2008), relating to the classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures. This regulatory framework ensures that dyeing processes are conducted according to high standards of safety, traceability and environmental responsibility, offering a reliable product for both the end user and the environment.

CAUTION: All our colors tend to have high fastnesses to light and washing. However, dark and bright colors, in the presence of alkaline or very aggressive soaps and prolonged processing/washing, may show even significant color loss. For materials dyed with these types of colors, we therefore recommend that a small sample be processed and washed before the final design is made. This is absolutely essential in case these materials are combined with raw or light-colored materials. In addition, it is a good idea never to dry artifacts in direct sunlight but in semi-shade.
