Loading...Piuma is a pure merino wool roving with a soft, slightly hairy texture and a compact structure that makes it surprisingly easy to work. The light twist preserves all the natural softness and lightness of merino fiber, while during working the yarn tends to swell, gaining volume and body. Suitable for needlepoint, crochet, handweaving, needlepunch and tufting, Piuma is one of the most versatile yarns around. The result, whichever technique you choose? If you work on large projects or use techniques such as hand weaving, tufting or needlepunch, spooling is the most practical and convenient choice. It holds more yarn at a more attractive price per gram, runs smoothly and continuously-perfect for feeding directly onto looms, knitting machines or tufting guns-and ensures that only one batch of color is used, eliminating the risk of the barred effect. What’s more, fewer balls means less packaging-a small extra gesture toward sustainability.
Availability and packaging

The Piuma wool yarn you buy in spools is exactly the same yarn as the Piuma yarn in balls. It may be, however, that at first glance the yarn may appear to you to be of a different (finer) count. This is because when the yarn is spooled it is held in tension and therefore tends to thin. Start working it and you will see that as the yarn loses tension and incorporates air, it will tend to regain its natural volume.

Piuma yarn is born entirely in Prato, one of the most prestigious textile districts in the world, from our extra fine merino wool tops-a 100% wool worsted sliver with a micron count of about 19 microns, which guarantees exceptional softness in contact with the skin. The raw material comes from selected farms in South America, particularly Argentina, Uruguay and Chile: regions with a long tradition in sheep farming and high quality standards in textile fiber production.
From the raw fiber to the finished yarn, the entire processing takes place in Italy: a short, controlled supply chain, combining the quality of South American raw material with Tuscan craftsmanship.
Our merino wool is mulesing-free, meaning it comes from farms that do not practice mulesing, a surgical procedure used in some parts of the world to prevent parasitic infestations in sheep. The choice to use wool from supply chains that exclude this practice reflects our commitment to animal welfare and more responsible farm management.
The dyes used for our products meet the requirements of the OEKO-TEX standard, which guarantees the control and limitation of substances potentially harmful to human health and the environment.
Fiber dyeing is carried out in our dyehouse in Italy, in compliance with current European regulations on chemicals and environmental safety, including the REACH Regulation (EC No. 1907/2006), which governs the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemical substances.
Operating within the European Union also entails compliance with additional provisions on environmental protection and textile product safety, such as the CLP Regulation (EC No. 1272/2008), relating to the classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures. This regulatory framework ensures that dyeing processes are conducted according to high standards of safety, traceability and environmental responsibility, offering a reliable product for both the end user and the environment.
Our Feather wool yarn in spools is perfect for weaving, macramé, needlepunch and tufting projects.
With the loom: we worked the yarn with a 20:10 comb-loom (2 threads/cm). This is a yarn recommended only for experienced weavers as it is very delicate. It holds weaving very well but you need to keep the comb close and be very careful. It does not hold up to tearing. Once woven it is firm and soft.
Tips for working and care.
Pure wool rovings have little or no twist, and with the first few washes they tend to compact slightly - this is not felting, but a natural settling of the fiber. If this is your first time working with such a yarn, we recommend that you make a small test sample and wash it by hand in cold water, or better yet, dry clean. This step is especially important if you intend to work Piuma with coarse needles or with pierced and very open stitches: the sample will allow you to calibrate needles and measurements accurately.
Our colors generally have high light fastness and wash fastness. Exceptions are fluorescent colors, which have low light fastness and may release color in the presence of alkaline or harsh soaps and with prolonged washing. The same applies to dark, bright colors. In all these cases, it is essential to test a small sample before starting the project, especially if these materials are combined with raw or light-colored fibers. In any case, it is always a good idea to dry artifacts away from direct sunlight, preferably in semi-shade.
A practical tip: Buying balls or spools of different baths can cause what is known as the barred effect: subtle variations in shade that seem invisible when comparing balls and spools, but become apparent once worked. Therefore, always be sure to buy some yarn in excess of what is needed for your project. We will be sure to send you spools and balls of the same lot.
