Availability and packaging
Our Feather is available in 200 g skeins, which can be purchased individually or in packs of 10 per color. Each pack has a natural tolerance of ±3%. The different packages are designed both for those who need small quantities and for those who need large quantities and/or want to save.

Piuma XXL is born entirely in Prato, one of the most prestigious textile districts in the world, from our extra fine merino wool tops-a 100% wool worsted sliver with a micron count of about 19 microns, which guarantees exceptional softness in contact with the skin. The raw material comes from selected farms in South America, particularly Argentina, Uruguay and Chile: regions with a long tradition in sheep farming and high quality standards in textile fiber production.
From the raw fiber to the finished yarn, the entire processing takes place in Italy: a short, controlled supply chain, combining the quality of South American raw material with Tuscan craftsmanship.
Our merino wool is mulesing-free, meaning it comes from farms that do not practice mulesing, a surgical procedure used in some parts of the world to prevent parasitic infestations in sheep. The choice to use wool from supply chains that exclude this practice reflects our commitment to animal welfare and more responsible farm management.
The dyes used for our products meet the requirements of the OEKO-TEX standard, which guarantees the control and limitation of substances potentially harmful to human health and the environment.
Fiber dyeing is carried out in our dyehouse in Italy, in compliance with current European regulations on chemicals and environmental safety, including the REACH Regulation (EC No. 1907/2006), which governs the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemical substances.
Operating within the European Union also entails compliance with additional provisions on environmental protection and textile product safety, such as the CLP Regulation (EC No. 1272/2008), relating to the classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures. This regulatory framework ensures that dyeing processes are conducted according to high standards of safety, traceability and environmental responsibility, offering a reliable product for both the end user and the environment.
Our XXL feather wool yarn is worked with very coarse needles and crochet hooks, 10 and up. It is also perfect for weaving, macramé, needlepunch and tufting projects.
With needles: perfect for shaved knit, ribs and hints of relief.
Withcrochet: low knitting ensures a compact result and can be lightened by alternating it with chains.
With the loom: we worked the yarn with a 10:10 comb-loom (1 thread/cm). This is a yarn recommended only for experienced weavers as it is very delicate. It holds weaving very well but you need to keep the comb close and be very careful. It does not hold up to tearing. Once woven it is firm and soft.
Tips for working and care.
Pure wool rovings have little to no twist, and with the first washes they tend to compact slightly — this is not felting, but a natural settling of the fiber. If this is your first time working with this type of yarn, we recommend making a small test swatch and washing it by hand in cold water, or even better, dry cleaning it. This step is particularly important if you intend to work Piuma with large needles or with lace and very open stitches: the swatch will allow you to calibrate needles and measurements precisely.
Our colors generally have high light fastness and wash fastness. Exceptions are fluorescent colors, which have low light fastness and may release color in the presence of alkaline or harsh soaps and with prolonged washing. The same applies to dark, bright colors. In all these cases, it is essential to test a small sample before starting the project, especially if these materials are combined with raw or light-colored fibers. In any case, it is always a good idea to dry artifacts away from direct sunlight, preferably in semi-shade.
A practical tip: Buying balls or spools of different baths can cause what is known as the barred effect: subtle variations in shade that seem invisible when comparing balls and spools, but become apparent once worked. Therefore, always be sure to buy some yarn in excess of what is needed for your project. We will be sure to send you spools and balls of the same lot.
