Bookhou and an Art Nouveau style needle punch

Bookhou is a multidisciplinary design studio in Toronto, founded by Arounna and John in 2002.In their workshop they’ve got furniture, decorated ceramics, textile and paper pieces, all creatively made by hand using natural materials. They’re all lovingly inspired by their surroundings whether it be urban or rural. A shadow on the pavement, the overhead metro cables or even the great outdoors can all be a subject of study and creative impulse.

Bookhou and our yarns

Lately Arounna has chosen the needle punch technique to make cushions, bags and wall art and soon realized that this ancient technique for embroidery worked really well on Instagram as a way of drawing attention to her profile.

And that’s exactly how I came across Bookhou and so I decided to see what she thought about a project using the needle punch technique and our yarns. The outcome is a mini capsule collection inspired by our winter yarns, which Arounna chose, in particular, Piuma and Cyrcus.

Arounna loves working with natural fibres like linen and wool as they offer a pleasant tactile sensation and poured her love into this exclusive, purely inspirational collection whose style reminds us of the classy Art Nouveau one.

Both the chosen colours and the shapes remind us of the magnificent stained-glass windows by the artist Tiffany. The collection is made up of a polka dot cushion, a small wall art with a kaleidoscopic flower and a clutch with swaying leaves. 3 very different pieces, connected by a palette of colours blended to perfection and also by the fact they were made together using the dateless needle punch technique.

A glimpse into the near future

At the Bookhou studio there’s no lack of curiosity or the desire to put themselves out there. The next upcoming project they’ve got their sights set on is a collection of organizers, wrapping paper and postards with their favourite topics on. I’m more than sure that this project will be successful, also because when I asked Arounna: If you were a book, which one would you be? She answered that she’d be a book about how to keep creativity top-notch. The determined and original artists always achieve their goals.
