How to crochet lucky mini horses

Lucky charms and amulets have an undeniable allure, as well as a centuries-old history. These small objects carry a very specific meaning: they are meant to protect us from bad luck and help us enjoy a good life. They come in countless shapes, materials, and purposes, yet they all share the same enchanting appeal.

Today we are bringing you crocheted lucky mini horses. Sweet little talismans you can hang on a bag, a keyring, a necklace, the rear-view mirror in your car, or a backpack – wherever you feel they look good and can offer you protection and strenght. Believing in them or not is not the point; their true purpose is to give us hope whenever we look at them.

To make these mini horses, you work the two body pieces separately in single crochet, then join them with a crochet seam during which you shape the clasp and the tail. The mane is created by adding fringes with the crochet hook.

The real game changer here is the yarn: Ghost. A highly technical, flat, glossy yarn that glides beautifully and has the perfect texture for accessories like these. Do not look for other yarns, because you will only get mini horses as beautiful as these by using Ghost. Choose your favorite color from our online shop, then start giving Luck a little helping hand.

INSTRUCTIONS

The charm is worked flat in 2 mirrored halves, which are joined with single crochet at the end, stuffing as you go. Replace the first stitch of every single crochet row with 1 chain stitch, unless otherwise specified.

Start with the first half.

For the first leg, with crochet hook n° 3 EU / D US, chain 4 stitches and work 1 row of 4 single crochets on the wrong side, then set this piece aside.

For the second leg, with crochet hook n° 3 EU / D US, chain 4 stitches.

Row 1 (wrong side): work 1 single crochet in each of the 4 chains, turn
row 2 (right side): work 1 single crochet in each of the 4 stitches, chain 6 new stitches, work 1 single crochet in each of the 4 stitches of the first leg, thus joining the two parts, turn. Now continue across all stitches
rows 3 to 9: work in single crochet, turning at the end of every row
row 10 (right side): work 1 slip stitch in each of the first 7 stitches and 1 single crochet in each of the last 7 stitches, then chain 6 new stitches, turn
row 11 (wrong side): work in single crochet, turn
row 12 (right side): decrease 1 stitch by working 2 single crochets together over the first 2 stitches, then continue in single crochet to the end of the row, turn
row 13 (wrong side): work in single crochet, turn
rows 14 to 17: repeat rows 12 and 13 two more times
row 18: work 1 single crochet in each of the first 4 stitches, then chain 3 and skip the next single crochet, work 1 single crochet in the next stitch and 1 slip stitch in each of the last 4 stitches.

Cut the yarn and weave in the end.

Work the second half in reverse.

Finishing

Place the two halves together with the right sides facing out, then with crochet hook n° 3 EU / D US join the yarn in the top corner space corresponding to the horse’s head and work single crochet all around the entire edge to join the two halves, inserting the hook each time through the stitch or row end of both layers; just before you finish closing, remember to insert the stuffing. Once you have closed the shape, do not cut the yarn and, always inserting the hook into the same corner space, make the ears and hanging loop for the charm: for the first ear, chain 9 stitches and close into a ring with 1 slip stitch in the corner below; for the second ear, work as for the first; for the hanging loop, chain 41 stitches and close into a ring with 1 slip stitch in the corner below. Cut the yarn and weave in the end.

For the tail, with crochet hook n° 3 EU / D US, join the yarn in the corresponding corner space (see photo) and chain 7 stitches. Cut the yarn, leaving a long enough tail to tie a knot at the last chain.

For the mane fringes, cut 11 strands approx. 12 cm / 4.7″ long, then knot them at regular intervals along the diagonal between the ears and the start of the back as follows: insert crochet hook n° 3 EU / D US in the space where you want to place the fringe, fold one strand in half, grab the fold with the hook and pull it through to form a small loop, then pass the fringe ends through the loop. Trim the fringes evenly.
