Before introducing the mock garter stitch, let’s explain what a garter stitch is. The garter stitch is a basic stitch where all the rows are knitted, and the resulting pattern is reminiscent of small waves. In this tutorial we are going to revisit this stitch, albeit using the crochet technique! We will achieve a texture quite similar to the classic garter stitch.

The right side and the wrong side of the piece will be different. The ‘garter’ effect is visible on the right side. The stitch is very compact; therefore, it is perfect for creating accessories like bags and cases even for home decor items like cushions or runners.

Tutorial: how to crochet the mock garter stitch

MATERIALS
Sailorman yarn col. Saffron 100 g / 3.5 oz
Crochet hook n° 6 EU / J USA

METHOD

The stitch is based on an even or odd number of chain stitches.

It is not reversible and on the right side it looks similar to the knitted garter stitch.

The gauge in the photo has 26 base chains and 26 rows. Over 10 cm / 4″ there are 18 stitches and 20 rows.

Row 1, right side: skip the first chain stitch, 1 slip stitch in the front loop in all chain stitches in the row, turn over the piece
row 2, wrong side: 1 chain stitch, 1 slip stitch in the back loop in all stitches in the row, turn over the piece
row 3, right side: 1 chain stitch, 1 slip stitch in the front loop in all stitches in the row, turn over the piece.

Repeat rows 2 and 3.
