How to knit a striped sweater with elbow-length sleeves

This sweater is one of those timeless designs that, especially because it is striped, you simply need to have in your wardrobe. We also wanted to reinforce the classic feel by choosing a white and blue color combination. But this sweater also features details that make it particularly refined and very feminine: elbow-length sleeves that just cover the upper arm, sleeve edges finished in a contrasting color, and bold stripes. And then there is Stromboli yarn, one of our iconic pure cotton tape yarns, which gives the garment a dense, unique texture.

A pair of jeans, red lipstick, and earrings are the perfect finishing touch. If you would like a different color combination, you can do that too: just go to our online shop and choose from the many shades available. Have fun.

INSTRUCTIONS

The sweater is worked flat in 2 pieces, back and front. The neckline and armhole bands are worked afterwards by picking up stitches.

How to knit the back

With knitting needles n° 6 EU / 10 US and col. Mediterranean, cast on 39 (41, 45) stitches.

Row 1: work the first stitch in knit stitch, repeat (1 purl stitch, 1 knit stitch) to the end of the row
row 2: work the first stitch in purl stitch, repeat (1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch) to the end of the row
rows 3 and 4: repeat rows 1 and 2.

The lower 1×1 rib band, measuring 3 cm / 1.2″, is finished. Work 6 rows in stockinette stitch, then change to col. Milk and continue in stockinette stitch, always alternating 10 rows in col. Milk with 10 rows in col. Mediterranean until you complete row 55 (57, 59): you have worked a total of 59 (61, 63) rows, measuring 50 (52, 54) cm / 19.7″ (20.5″, 21.2″). Bind off.

How to knit the front

With knitting needles n° 6 EU / 10 US and col. Mediterranean, cast on 39 (41, 45) stitches and work as for the back to row 52 (54, 54), measuring approx. 44.5 (46.5, 46.5) cm / 17.5″ (18.3″, 18.3″).

Row 53 (55, 55): work the first 14 (15, 17) stitches in knit stitch, bind off the next 11 stitches for the neckline, work the last 14 (15, 17) stitches in knit stitch
row 54 (56, 56): work the 14 (15, 17) stitches of the second side in purl stitch. Now continue only on this second side, leaving the stitches of the first side on a stitch holder
row 55 (57, 57): decrease 1 stitch for the neckline by working 1 slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over over the first 2 stitches, then work in knit stitch to the end of the row
row 56 (58, 58): work in purl stitch
rows 57 to 59 (59 to 61, 59 to 63): repeat rows 55 and 56 (57 and 58, 57 and 58) another 1 (1, 2) times, then work row 55 (57, 57) once more. Bind off.

Resume working on the stitches of the first side and work as for the second side but in reverse.

How to knit the finishing

Sew the seams following the color changes. Sew one shoulder. For the neckband, with knitting needles n° 6 EU / 10 US and col. Milk, pick up an even number of stitches around the front and back neckline. Work 4 rows in 1×1 rib, then bind off. Sew the neckband and the other shoulder. For the armhole bands, with knitting needles n° 6 EU / 10 US and col. Mediterranean, pick up an even number of stitches along the 34 (36, 38) cm / 13.4″ (14.2″, 15″) across the shoulder seam, corresponding to the entire armhole. Work 4 rows in 1×1 rib, then bind off. Close the armhole bands and sew the side seams.
