Here we are again, with a new stitch to share with you: the Dutch braid stitch. We all know that the braid is a classic pattern and what we are showing you today is beautiful, full bodied, and ample, much like the braids we use to style our hair that we love so much! Did you know that the braid potentially dates back to ancient Egypt and that during the Middle Ages noble women competed to see who has the most spectacular braid?

The yarn we have selected is Piuma in the color Fairytale, one from our print collection. We really like this style; however, you can also select a color from the Classics collection if you prefer. On the shop you can find more than 50 variations of our Piuma yarn.

Tutorial: how to knit the Dutch braid stitch

MATERIALS
Piuma yarn col. Fairytale 100 g / 3.5 oz
Needles n° 8 EU / 11 US

METHOD

We work off 12 foundation stitches.

Reverse stocking stitches on the sides of the pattern are not shown on the diagram and are not indicated in the explanation.

Row 1: work purl stitches, follow this step on the reverse side of the piece.

From row 2 to row 6: work knit stitches.

Row 3 and all other uneven rows of the piece: work purl stitches
row 4: knit 6 cross stitches left for 2 times.

To knit 6 cross stitches left: keep 3 stitches open in front, knit 3, knit the 3 open stitches.

Row 8: knit 3 stitches, 6 cross stitches left, knit 3
row 10: repeat from the second row.

Follow the above instructions. In the uneven rows, not shown on the diagram, purl all stitches, knit the first row as shown on the diagram.
