How to knit the grating stitch in relief

Today we are going to learn a variation of a classic stitch, that is, the grating stitch in relief. It is a subtle and dense weaving that is suggestive of a wrought iron grating. Maybe even of the majestic gates that guard some Tuscan farmhouses, at times surrounded by ivy or wisteria stretching along the stone walls of the property. It is a very suitable stitch for a warm winter jumper.

METHOD

We work off foundation stitches in multiples of 8 + 8.

The reverse stockinette stitches on the sides of the pattern are not represented on the diagram and are not indicated in the explanation.

Row 1: purl 2, *4 cross stitches right A, purl 4*, repeat from * to * twice more, finish with 4 cross stitches right A, purl 2.

To carry out 4 cross stitches right A: keep 2 open stitches behind, knit 2, knit the 2 open stitches.

Row 3: 4 cross stitches right B: *4 cross stitches left B, 4 cross stitches right B*, repeat three times from * to * and finish with 4 cross stitches left B.

To carry out 4 cross stitches right B: keep 2 open stitches behind, knit 2, purl the 2 open stitches.
To carry out 4 cross stitches left B: keep 2 open stitches in front, purl 2, knit the 2 open stitches.

Row 5: knit 2, purl 2, *purl 2, 4 cross stitches left A, purl 2*, repeat from * to * and finish with purl 2, knit 2.

To carry out 4 cross stitches left A: keep 2 open stitches in front, knit 2, knit the 2 open stitches.

Row 7: 4 cross stitches left B, *4 cross stitches right B, 4 cross stitches left B*, repeat three times from * to * and finish with 4 cross stitches right B
Row 9: repeat from row 1.

start with the stitch that preceded the first *, repeat three times from * to * and finish with the stitches that follow the second *.

On even rows, not represented on the diagram, knit all the stitches as they appear, knit on knit and purl on purl.
